Artist Statement:

My memento piece is inspired by my fond memories of creating pieces of art out of clay, during my high school career. The medium, clay, in more ways than one represents myself and how I was constantly learning, creating, and growing. The process of creating art with clay takes time and patience due to the many variables that allow clay to be molded. I wanted to 'relive' and reflect on the process of using clay in this piece by focusing on folding a thin slab. The overall shape of the piece melts perfectly right into my hand as if the clay was still soft and not leather hard. The wavy and slight opening of the piece brings contrast between the outer appearance and what is inside. The 'vessel' so to speak holds my memories within. I also wanted to further emphasize contrast, so I decided to use metallic gold on the inside and white paint on the exterior to draw the viewers attention to the crevice and opening in the 'vessel'.
