Identity Portrait

In Process Documentation

Identity Portrait - Rooted and Flourishing
Material: Masking tape, spray paint, plastic bag, hot glue
Dimensions: 24 x 13 x 4.5 in

Artist Statement:
There are many layers, subgroups, and labels that society creates to make up ones identity but I wanted to focus on the ones that I think are important and truly matter. I chose to use flowers and leaves because as humans we are always learning and growing. Specifically, all flowers are different and go through different seasons. As humans we are all made uniquely different in our own ways. The different seasons of our life, both the good and the bad, influence and shape who we will become. The head piece of flowers represents internal factors and how our true beauty should come from within. Our outer appearance will fade away in time. This also represents how some mask their true identity behind fake appearances, both physically and mentally. The breastplate of leaves represents how we should protect our hearts and be sensitive towards others. I chose to use masking tape as the main material because of its flexibility and flat and thin surface. The contrast between the dark green leaves and white flowers create a unified piece that reflects how the two components make up someones identity. The piece overall emphasizes how important it is to be rooted and confident in who you are and to keep 'flourishing' throughout your life.
