50 Pieces

50 Pieces

In Process Documentation:

Title: 50 Pieces
Medium: Clay

Artist Statement:

For this assignment I wanted to explore different hand building techniques that correlated with molding over and within the human hand. All objects made in this collection were at one point in the building process, molded or shaped by the organic and draping form of the palm of my hand using a wet sponge. The white pieces in particular, show positive and negative space in a simplistic and uniform visual appeal. The blue pieces are also uniform but explore more of the draping form created when modeled within the palm of my hand. As two cohesive yet contrasting pieces, I wanted to balance out the two similar pieces but with the same simplistic tone and theme. I am also fond of the radial symmetrical shape and the visual experience it creates for the viewer when looking at all 50 pieces. Overall the final collection represents my artistic style of creating balanced and harmonious pieces that create a unique visual experience for the viewer.

Title: Elevating Tension
Medium: Clay

Artist Statement:

This piece in its entirety, is a visual and physical representation of active tension between two forces. The piece is resting yet also hanging. It is simplistic in form but yet complex in detail. The piece has a uniform and collective visual appeal and emphasizes balance and symmetry. The glaze chosen for this piece correlates with the metal chain due to the golden pieces within the glaze. Their is an industrial feel to the piece but yet the overall meaning of the piece is centered around the idea of intensity and opposing forces. The sound incorporated with this work includes segments of intense wind noises that radiate between the two opposing pieces of clay that create one cohesive work. Overall all elements of this work help show tension between two opposing forces that alike in style and form but still uniquely different.

2D Masked Metaphor Description

Masked Metaphor Project - Metaphor Description

The image above can be depicted as a metaphor because of the replacement of typical norms associated with this particular setting. Every component of this image is significant and has an important role in giving the viewer context clues for understanding the metaphor.
This image was taken in front of the elevator on the first floor of the Flagler College Proctor Library. Any person can identify that this is an entrance way with a welcome mat, a typical object in front of doorways. In the image a person is walking on and over a welcome mat to get to their destination. The action of someone walking on and over someone also represents someone who lets others ‘walk over them’ and could be described as someone who is not confident in themselves and takes on others ‘dirt’ and problems. For most college students this is not an uncommon label due to the many people that they are meeting and getting to know on campus. Most college students are also discovering who they are and let others influence and leave their ’print’ on them. The humorous look on the individuals face who is stepping on the door mat represents how others take joy and pride from walking over others.
The reading, An Introduction to Postmodernism, describes how multiple substitutions can be made to create different meanings. The image above being a metaphor for someone who is passive, indecisive, and complacent, further represents how substitutions made reflect a paradigmatic shift. Paradigmatic shifts pertain to the substitution of things that have similarities. The door mat in the image is being substituted for a person, which are both nouns.

Artist Statement:

With this project I wanted to focus on repetition and emphasis, so I chose pieces used in my Identity Portrait work. The overall final solution is similar to that of a traditional quilt pattern but with a modern twist. I specifically chose to use a limited color palette because I wanted the final solution to still be a unified piece. The white dots in the center of every square create an illusion effect once the viewer stares at the piece long enough.

Identity Portrait

In Process Documentation

Identity Portrait - Rooted and Flourishing
Material: Masking tape, spray paint, plastic bag, hot glue
Dimensions: 24 x 13 x 4.5 in

Artist Statement:
There are many layers, subgroups, and labels that society creates to make up ones identity but I wanted to focus on the ones that I think are important and truly matter. I chose to use flowers and leaves because as humans we are always learning and growing. Specifically, all flowers are different and go through different seasons. As humans we are all made uniquely different in our own ways. The different seasons of our life, both the good and the bad, influence and shape who we will become. The head piece of flowers represents internal factors and how our true beauty should come from within. Our outer appearance will fade away in time. This also represents how some mask their true identity behind fake appearances, both physically and mentally. The breastplate of leaves represents how we should protect our hearts and be sensitive towards others. I chose to use masking tape as the main material because of its flexibility and flat and thin surface. The contrast between the dark green leaves and white flowers create a unified piece that reflects how the two components make up someones identity. The piece overall emphasizes how important it is to be rooted and confident in who you are and to keep 'flourishing' throughout your life.

2D Performance Art- Wasteful Money

I am a wasteful money spender and I emphasize my bad habit by throwing away the ugly, bent, and dirty, dollar bills at the end of each month.

2D Performance Art- Play'n with Mulch

Play'n with Mulch

When I play with mulch I like to repeat sounds and make different rhythms.
